Organic Coffee I heard? It’s The Best!
I will give you a quick rundown of what organic is, and why I believe people should strictly drink organic coffee.
1) No synthetic chemicals or pesticides are allowed to be used to raise certified organic crops.
2) Organic certified products can’t use unnatural, genetically engineered crops or animals.
3) Foods labeled 100% organic can only contain certified organic ingredients, except for water and salt.
4) The term “certified organic” can be a little tricky. In this case only 95% of the ingredients need to be certified organic, the remaining 5% have to be on the USDA approved list and can’t be available in a non-organic form.
5) Items that are 100% Organic or Organic (95% organic) can display the USDA organic logo.
6) Agricultural products labeled organic, such as organic coffee, must not be treated with sewage sludge (yes many crops are), or ionizing radiation.
The above is just a quick checklist of the USDA organic labeling guidelines. Onto Organic Coffee. Since we are looking at coffee, you can be almost completely confident that 100% of the coffee beans are organic in an organically grown blend.
Do you want to know why you should care if your coffee is organic?
1) You probably wouldn’t want to consume coffee that was treated with sewage sludge, do you?
2) In the United States, genetically mangled crops don’t have to be labeled as such, so the only way to be sure your coffee was not genetically modified is to purchase organic coffee.
3) For you decaf. drinkers, organic coffee is your safest option. Regular coffees use nasty substances like methylene chloride and ethyl acetate to decaffeinate the coffee beans. Organic decaf. coffees are treated by a water process. There is evidence to suggest that drinking chemical processed decaffeinated coffees may lead to rheumatoid arthritis.
4) Chemicals are bad for the farmers. Coffee is cultivated in primarily poor places in the world, and many farmers are not able to read herbicide warning labels, leading to erroneous mixing of chemicals, and therefore, toxic exposure for them and the environment.
The above are just a few reasons to only purchase organic coffee. It goes much deeper than the coffee itself. A lot of toxins are produced in the manufacturing of non-organic chemicals.
As a final thought, farmers that cultivate their coffees organically are giving specieal attention to the intrinsic needs of their coffee, so the result is pampered coffee that tastes great! I don’t care if you think I’m just trying to put forth my agenda, or promote your good health, please give organic coffee a taste and pass the word.
